SPRING 2017 Workshop Series
In partnership with Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, all workshops will take place at Woolly Mammoth Theatre.
February 21 | 7pm-10pm | Facilitating Difficult Conversations with Latisha Jones
Sometimes you know it's going to happen and sometimes it just sneaks up on you. You're just going about your day and BAM! someone makes a comment or snide remark and you have the choice to let it go or engage in a difficult conversation. In this workshop, participants will learn techniques to navigate those moments and how engage in difficult conversation topics while remaining assertive, empathetic and calm. Through games, role-playing and observation, participants will practice these conversation techniques and develop a personalized communication plan to take with them through their everyday lives.
February 28 |7pm-10pm | Intro to Playback Theatre with District Community Playback (formerly Synergy Playback)
In this workshop participants will be introduced to Playback Theatre, an improvised performance style that elicits real emotions and stories from audience members that then inspire performances onstage that involve improvisation through music, movement, and poetry. Participants will get a chance to see their own stories or emotions performed as well as practicing how to effectively play back for others. No performance experience required, all levels welcome.
March 4 | 2pm-5pm | Solo Performance and Social Justice with Nilaja Sun
Join Obie award winning playwright, actor, and teaching artist Nilaja Sun in advance of her upcoming solo show PIKE ST. at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company. Participants will engage in writing exercises designed to teach a variety of playwriting techniques, and encourage them to find their own artistic voice. This workshop will also include a variety of physical and vocal warmups in service of crafting and differentiating multiple characters.
March 21 | 7pm-10pm | Intro to Theatre of the Oppressed with Annalisa Dias
An interactive session that introduces the variety of techniques of theatre of the oppressed, focusing most time on game play and Forum Theatre format. Some time will be spent on theory, but most time will be spent actively playing games and building short Forum Theatre scenes. Best suited to those who have never experienced theatre of the oppressed games.
April 4 | 7pm-10pm | Intro to Image Theatre with Mimsi Janis
In Image Theater, the body is used to create images that help participants explore power relations and group solutions to concrete problems. In this workshop participants will play a range of Image Theatre games. Wear clothes that are comfortable and allow for freedom of movement. No experience necessary, all levels welcome.
April 18 | 7pm-10pm | Open Facilitator Practice
Open time to practice facilitating games or activities and to receive feedback on your facilitation from the group. This session will be shaped by those who participate in it. You do not need to lead a game in order to attend this session. If you would like to practice leading an activity during this workshop, please email us at [email protected].
Workshops are limited to 20 participants due to space constraints. Registration required.

It seeks to answer the question: How do we meld community-driven dialogue and positive, concrete change through policy-making?
This workshop will focus on discussing the principles of Legislative Theatre, ways it can implemented, and will provide an opportunity to learn and practice Theatre of the Oppressed games.
